King of Curses
Sukuna's 20 fingers are the most dangerous cursed objects in existence. Each preserved finger contains 1/20th of Ryomen Sukuna's power — the King of Curses from the Heian Era. Indestructible and cursed-energy-attracting, these fingers drive the entire plot of Jujutsu Kaisen as Yuji Itadori must collect them all before Sukuna regains his full power.
Sukuna divided his soul into 20 indestructible fingers before his death 1,000 years ago, ensuring his eventual return to the world of the living. Each finger is a Special Grade cursed object that has survived through the centuries without decay, preserved by the immense cursed energy within. The fingers are physically indestructible — no known weapon or cursed technique can damage them. Even Gojo's Infinity and Hollow Purple cannot scratch a single finger.
Each finger contains exactly 1/20th of Sukuna's original power, but the relationship between finger count and combat ability is not linear. Power growth accelerates significantly with each additional finger consumed. A 15-finger Sukuna is exponentially stronger than a 5-finger version, as his true form and unique abilities unlock progressively. This nonlinear scaling means the final few fingers represent the largest power spikes, making their retrieval or consumption the most critical events in the story.
The fingers also serve as an anchor for Sukuna's soul. As long as even one finger remains unconsumed, Sukuna's soul cannot be fully destroyed. This creates a paradoxical situation where the fingers are both the key to Sukuna's power and the insurance policy for his continued existence in the world.
The 20 fingers are scattered across Japan, hidden in cursed locations, shrine vaults, ancient temples, and abandoned buildings. Jujutsu High has dedicated teams searching for them, but many remain unaccounted for despite centuries of effort. Some fingers have been consumed by curses, creating Finger Bearers — Special Grade curses that guard the fingers they have absorbed and become exponentially more dangerous.
As of the current storyline, Yuji has consumed 15 fingers total. The fingers have been collected at key moments throughout the story — during Yuji's initial introduction to jujutsu society, the Shibuya Incident, the Culling Games, and the climactic showdown with Gojo. Each consumption event marks a major power escalation and a significant shift in the balance of power.
Jujutsu High has been unable to locate the remaining missing fingers despite extensive searching using every available tracking method and cursed tool. Some speculate they are in Kenjaku's possession, hidden in impenetrable barriers, or have been consumed by unknown curses in remote locations. Each missing finger represents a potential Special Grade threat incubating somewhere in the shadows of the jujutsu world.
The fingers are indestructible because Sukuna bound his soul to them using an advanced cursed technique from the Heian Era that neither time nor violence can undo. They have survived fires, floods, earthquakes, wars, and 1,000 years of natural decay without any visible degradation. The only way to destroy a finger is to consume it — and even then, Sukuna's soul simply takes over the consumer from within.
The fingers naturally attract curses with their immense cursed energy signature. Any curse within a significant radius is drawn to a finger's energy, creating a constant state of danger around each unretrieved finger. This is not accidental — Sukuna designed them as traps. Curses that consume a finger become vessels, and Sukuna can choose to incarnate through them if he wishes, using them as temporary bodies to interact with the world.
The fingers emit a unique cursed energy signature that can be detected by experienced sorcerers, but the signal is often masked by other cursed energy sources. This makes locating the fingers extremely difficult even with dedicated tracking equipment and cursed tools designed specifically for this purpose.
Finger Bearers are Special Grade curses created when a curse consumes a Sukuna finger. These curses undergo a dramatic transformation, gaining immense power and intelligence far beyond their original capability. A Finger Bearer is effectively a pseudo-vessel, carrying Sukuna's power even though Sukuna himself does not actively control them.
The Finger Bearer encountered at the juvenile detention center was Yuji's first major mission as a jujutsu sorcerer. This curse had consumed a single finger and became powerful enough to create a domain-like barrier and defeat multiple Grade 1 sorcerers. Its strength demonstrated why every unretrieved finger is treated as a Class 1 priority by Jujutsu High.
Defeating a Finger Bearer requires either exorcising the curse and recovering the finger intact — which is extremely difficult — or destroying both the curse and the finger simultaneously. This makes Finger Bearer elimination missions some of the most dangerous assignments a sorcerer can receive.
The fingers are the key to Sukuna's full resurrection. If all 20 fingers are consumed and fully integrated into a single vessel, Sukuna will regain his original Heian Era power — making him stronger than any sorcerer or curse in the modern world. Yuji was created specifically as a vessel capable of hosting all 20 fingers without being immediately destroyed or possessed.
Sukuna has his own agenda for the fingers beyond simply regaining power. He wants to achieve something specific that requires his full strength — whether that is destroying humanity, reshaping the jujutsu world, or pursuing an unknown goal remains one of the series' central mysteries. His willingness to help Yuji in certain situations suggests he needs the vessel alive and cooperative until he reaches his full power.
The relationship between Sukuna and his vessel is complex. Unlike a typical cursed object where the curse simply takes over, Sukuna can choose when to manifest and can hold back his power. This gives him strategic flexibility that other cursed objects lack, making the fingers the most sophisticated and dangerous cursed objects in existence.
Sukuna's fingers serve as the central plot device of Jujutsu Kaisen, driving both the main narrative and the power scaling of the entire series. Each finger consumed raises the stakes and brings the world closer to Sukuna's full resurrection, creating a ticking clock that forces characters to grow stronger at an accelerated pace.
The fingers also represent a philosophical question at the heart of the series: is it better to use a dangerous weapon for good purposes or to keep it sealed away forever? Jujutsu High chose to keep the fingers in their possession rather than destroying them, a decision that enabled Yuji to gain power but also risked Sukuna's return. The fingers' indestructibility and curse-attracting properties make them a continuous source of conflict. Even if Sukuna is eventually defeated, the remaining unconsumed fingers would still pose a threat to the jujutsu world. This suggests the fingers may have a role to play in the series' conclusion beyond simply serving as power sources for the main antagonist.
